Sliding Glass Doors

Sliding glass doors (patio doors) can present a safety problem, and are probably a houses' most vulnerable door. Intruders know what the weaknesses can be for this type of door, and will fully take advantage of them. Since sliding doors can be lifted off the track, even if they are locked, there are a few preventative measures that one can take.

Mounting a heavy-duty slide lock to either the top or bottom of the doorframe can help secure the door. A hole can be drilled into the frame to allow a steel pin to be inserted to help prevent the door from being opened, or to allow the door to be left opened only large enough for ventilation or pets. "One-way" screws can be installed to the upper track to prevent the door from being lifted out. For added protection, insert a patio bar or wooden rod into the inside track to prevent the door from being open. Leave the outside patio light on near a sliding glass door to discourage intruders.

  Double Doors

Double doors and French doors both need double the security. Use a dead-bolt lock on the side that will be used the most, along with a high-security strike plate and reinforced hinges. Use a sliding bar or barrel bolts at both the top and bottom.
