Landscaping and Lights

Have you ever played "Hide and Seek"? Just like kids like to hide, so do intruders, they search out the darkest and least exposed entrance to your home, so when planning a landscaping project or when moving into an existing home that has mature landscaping, keep these few tips in mind:

§         Don't plant bushes that will grow too large in front of windows, this makes a perfect hiding place for intruders.

§         If plants or bushes are in front or under windows, make sure to keep them trimmed below the window to avoid intruders using them as a hiding shield.

§         Thorny plants can be used under windows or along wall or fences to avoid home invasion.

§         Bushes and scrubs that are around an entrance tend to make it darker and more inviting to an intruder, so keep entrance scrubs maintained or use an alternative like flowers.

§         Keep trees trimmed away from the house to avoid the possibility of an intruder using the tree climbs as a ladder to enter through an upper window or balcony door.

§         The overall landscaping plan should be uninviting to an intruder.

§         A well-kept yard is a sure sign that the property is occupied, and the owner is aware of the surroundings.

§         When doing yard work, always keep an eye out for any unusual changes, such as items in the yard that have been moved (like fire woods piled under a window) or plants that may have been altered.

§         Since intruders prefer to enter through a dark entrance, always keep the outside entrances well lighted, and change burned out bulbs as soon as possible.

§         Keep lights on in the house when you are out, altering which lights you leave on when you leave, so that a pattern cannot be established.

§         Motion sensor lighting is a good idea for areas that are not easily viewed from the inside of the house.
