Preventing Office Theft

Security measures can also be followed in an office environment. Safety should be an important concern for all employers, so helping keep the office working in a secure and steady fashion should be a businesses ultimate goal. Use these following tips to keep your workplace safe:

§         Have an office policy that would require all visitors to check-in and out at a front desk, to keep track of all non-employees present in the workplace. Visitor badges may be used to identify these visitors.

§         Have available at the front desk a list of scheduled daily repairs expected from each company. Always ask for identification of all service technicians coming to perform a service.

§         Have all employees report to a specified employee any broken equipment like doors, locks, windows, lights etc. that they may have encountered, so it can be scheduled for maintenance.

§         Require that all personal items of employees that are brought to the workplace be marked with some type of identification, such as a name or initials.

§         Employers should provide a safe and secure location for employees to put their personal items such as purses, wallets, keys, or other valuables. This location should also include the option to be locked.

§         For safety and fire reasons, always let others in the workplace know when you will be leaving, and when you have returned.

  Community Involvement

There are a few ways to get information about community involvement. There are usually crime prevention programs in major cities that can assist your organization with your crime prevention needs. Getting involved in community activities and crime prevention programs can be very advantageous. When people watch out for one another, less crime tends to happen. Other preventative measures are:

§         Get pertinent information about the crime history in your neighborhood, and determine what you can do to help like volunteering your time, giving advice from experience, or financial funding. You can also help advertise crime prevention events, or offer a place for community meetings.

§         Be prepared to give help to employees that have been victims of a crime. Victim service information is available so that you can help with support.

§         Start or participate in a Business Watch program. During meetings discuss business security problems, such as shoplifting, vandalism, or general business break-ins.

§         Giving back to the community by hiring employees from in and around your business shows your willingness to help the community grow. This theory can help teens in your community to be productive.

§         Keep employees informed on crime prevention activities or ideas during meetings, in newsletters, office memos, customer notices, or other ways of notification.

§         Set aside time for a crime prevention company meeting, and use role playing to teach employees what to due during a robbery or other situations that may occur.

§         If you employ service technicians or sales personnel that require traveling during the day, teach these employees techniques to stay safe. Being aware of your surrounding and keeping an eye out for suspicious behavior is very important. Have employees report anything out of the ordinary to the company dispatcher or police department. Teach the company dispatcher how to effectively deal with the information that has been reported.
